Reflection upon the trip

I think this photography field trip was very influential. We got a glimpse on every piece photography since its birth. Learning about the famous photographers and their background. Including their ways of creating their art in various fashions/methods that technology could offer at the time. Years going back as the late 1800's to now. I learned that, photography, is ultimately a form of art.

Notable Photographer: Annie Leibovitz

Photographer Annie Leibovitz was born October 2, 1949, in Waterbury, Connecticut. In 1970 she took a job at Rolling Stone magazine. In 1983 she began working for the entertainment magazine Vanity Fair. During the late 1980s, Leibovitz started to work on a number of high-profile advertising campaigns. From the 1990s to the present, she has been publishing and exhibiting her work. She was one of the six children born to Sam, an Air Force lieutenant, and Marilyn Leibovitz, a modern dance instructor. During the late 1980s, Leibovitz started to work on a number of high-profile advertising campaigns. Known for her ability to make her sitters become physically involved in her work, one of Leibovitz’s most famous portraits is of the late artist Keith Haring, who painted himself like one of his canvases for the photo. She is considered one of America’s best portrait photographers.

Notable Photographer: Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon was best known for his work in the fashion world and for his minimalist portraits. He worked first as a photographer for the Merchant Marines, taking identification photos. He then moved to fashion, shooting for Harper's Bazaar and Vogue, demanding that his models convey emotion and movement, a departure from the norm of motionless fashion photography. Richard Avedon was born on May 15, 1923 in New York City. His mother, Anna Avedon, came from a family of dress manufacturers, and his father, Jacob Israel Avedon, owned a clothing store called Avedon's Fifth Avenue. Inspired by his parents' clothing businesses, as a boy Avedon took a great interest in fashion, especially enjoying photographing the clothes in his father's store. One of the greatest photographers of the 20th century, Richard Avedon expanded the genre of photography with his surreal and provocative fashion photography as well as portraits that bared the souls of some of the most important and opaque figures in the world. Richard Avedon passed away on October 1, 2004, while on assignment for The New Yorker in San Antonio, Texas. He was 81 years old.

Alfred Stieglitz

 Alfred Stieglitz (January 1, 1864 – July 13, 1946) was an American photographer and modern art promoter who was instrumental over his fifty-year career in making photography an accepted art form. He developed modern photography in America in the early years of the twentieth century, publishing the periodical Camera Work and forming the exhibition society, the Photo-Secession. Apart from photography he was well famous for running art galleries in New York City.

Paul Strand

 Paul Strand, born October 16, 1890-March 31, 1976. Strand was an American photographer and filmmaker who, along with fellow modernist photographers like Alfred Stieglitz and Edward Weston, helped establish photography as an art form in the 20th century. Although he was never a member of the Communist party Strand was politically of the left, many of his collaborators were either Party members or were prominent socialist writers and activists. Many of his friends were also Communists or were suspected of being so. Strand was also closely involved with Frontier Films, one of more than twenty organizations that were branded as ‘subversive’ and ‘un-American’ by the US Attorney General. His sympathies were with the ordinary working man and woman and much of his photography was concerned with the dignity and importance of labour and the "working class". He saw himself as a documentary photographer who's role was to record and reveal the truth about social injustice and the position of the common man. He insisted that his books should be printed in Leipzig, East Germany, even if this meant that they were initially prohibited from the American market on account of their Communist provenance. De-classified intelligence files, obtained under the Freedom of Information Act and now lodged at the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, reveal that Strand’s movements around Europe were closely monitored by the security services.

Gordon Parks

 Parks began to explore subjects beyond portraits and fashion photographs in Chicago. He became interested in the low-income black neighborhoods of Chicago's South Side. In 1941, Parks won a photography fellowship with the Farm Security Administration for his images of the inner city.
 Parks created some of his most enduring photographs during this fellowship, including "American Gothic, Washington, D.C.," picturing a member of the FSA cleaning crew in front of an American flag.
 He also became a freelance photographer for Vogue. Parks worked for Vogue for a number of years, developing a distinctive style that emphasized the look of models and garments in motion, rather than in static poses. And also working as a documentary photographer during the civil rights movement.

Dorothea Lange

Dorothea Lange was a photographer whose portraits of displaced farmers during the Great Depression greatly influenced later documentary photography.During the Great Depression, Dorothea Lange photographed the unemployed men who wandered the streets. Her photographs of migrant workers were often presented with captions featuring the words of the workers themselves. Lange’s first exhibition, held in 1934, established her reputation as a skilled documentary photographer. In 1940, she received the Guggenheim Fellowship.

William Klein Blog

As an artist using photography, he set out to re-invent the photographic document. His photos, often blurred or out of focus, his high-contrast prints (his negatives were often severely over-exposed), his use of high-grain film and wide angles shocked the established order of the photography world and he earned a reputation as an anti-photographer's photographer. Inspired by moholy-nagy and kepes, he began to experiment with juxtaposing abstract painting and photography. Alexander liberman, painter and director of 'vogue' america met klein at one of klein's parisian sculpture shows and was fascinated, both by his sculpture (kinetic light panels on photosensitive glass)and by the photographs klein had recently begun to take. he invited klein to come to new york to discuss a job.

LET’S KEEP OUR CHILDREN SAFE

Why is it every time I turn on the news,

It’s always singing the blues? 

Kids are being killed, kidnapped, molested, raped or abandoned…

What’s wrong with this picture? Kids are our future? 

It’s sad that there are children in this world that are dying from diseases or starvation. 

But that doesn’t make it right to abuse children due to frustration. 

Something has to be done! Our children can’t even go to the park to have fun, 

Because someone wants to shoot off a gun. 

I always ask myself, “Why are kids falling from the sky”? 

I never get a reply. 

They say these things are meant to be, 

But those things are hard for me to believe. 

How can anyone hurt a kid anyway? 

Can you answer that question? I’m still puzzled to this day. 

What gets me is that this type of behavior towards children has been going on for many years, 

And every time I hear a child go down, all I can do is shed tears. 

Let’s make this world a better place 

To keep our children safe, 

And see a beautiful smile on their face. 

Not to see them lying inside a case. 

Reflection on Diane Arbus

 My look on the video is understanding a different point of view from someone so original as a photographer like, Diane. Her photos portray differences and an unimaginable vision that was only prior to her. That's what made her creations so unique. Because it took time to actually figure out the meaning of the photo. Most of them having to do with darkness and hidden objects that are the origin of the photo.

Camera Exposure Assignment

Something that I've learned from the website is that, shutter speed is a powerful tool for freezing or exaggerating the appearance of motion. Instead of blurring the subject, one could instead render everything else blurred. This requires the camera to either be located on the moving subject itself, or aimed in such a way that the image frame moves with the subject. This camera setting can be a useful tool when the appearance of motion is more important than depth of field, or just for letting you know whether your desired shutter speed is even possible using available light. The above analysis assumes that subject motion is the primary source of blur, but in many photos camera shake can instead be more influential particularly when using telephoto lenses or with unsteady hands.

  Robert Frank is a photographer and filmmaker: independent, unconventional and personal in both media, Frank is best known for his work in photography-arguably his book The Americans is the most influential book of photographs of the past fifty years with nine separate editions not counting foreign. However, Frank has played the outsider throughout his career. Born in Switzerland in 1924, Frank grew up the son of a wealthy Jewish family with a Swiss mother and a German father; he turned to photography for expression as well as a way to escape the pressures of his business-oriented family. Living in Europe during the Second World War-while although safe in Switzerland-impacted Frank and affected his understanding of oppression which is later seen in his work.

Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico is a photograph by Ansel Adams, taken late in the afternoon on November 1, 1941, from a shoulder of U.S. Route 84-285. The photograph became so popular and collectible that Adams personally made over 1,300 photographic prints of it during his long career. Using depth of field as a mechanism for a landscape photo.

This image portrays a lot of double exposure and black out. I find this picture amusing because it has to do urban street culture. Which I am a fan of. The streets, the lights, the people is ultimately great.

Weegee Photo Description

Act of Love at the Astor Theatre, Times Square, 1954. After moving to Hollywood in 1947, Weegee devoted most of his energy to making 16mm films and photographs for his “Distortions” series, a project that resulted in experimental portraits of celebrities and political figures. He returned to New York in 1952 and lectured and wrote about photography until his death on 27 December 1968

The Welcoming

  I felt like I could breathe once again. The open air made me feel as if I were a fish back in water after being on land for a long time. I could feel the sun warming my pale face. The brightness was overwhelming compared to my old dark, damp room. It was hard to describe the happiness that flowed through my body as I saw cars and young children once more. I could smell the aroma of hot dogs and coffee instead of the horrible stench of leftover food from last night. I could hear the buzz of people talking and giggling of happy mothers. This was a great improvement to the ‘drip, drip, drip’ of my broken tap that I fell asleep to each night on the cold, hard concrete ‘bed’ I was allocated.
  I was greeted with the love and affection of my family that I had not seen for the five years, two months and seventeen days I was locked up. It was a definite thing that I would not miss the aggression and anger that the people in there live off. People full of hate.
  I felt my mother’s soft, but slightly cracked, lips press against my rough cheek. I held her tightly and sensed a tear fall from her eye and onto my clothes near my chest. I was greeted with warm hugs and wet kisses but the one thing that lingered in the back of my mind through all of this was my father. After all this time, he had not come to forgive me, but instead, he had disowned me and loathed my existence. I guess I could not change any of this but I was just thankful that my mother, through my whole twenty-nine years of living, stuck with me, through thick and thin and was glad to welcome me back home.

Henri Cartier-Bresson. Born August 22, 1908 – August 3, 2004. Henri was a French photographer considered to be the master of candid photography, and an early user of 35 mm film. He helped develop street photography, and approvingly cited a notion of the inevitability of a decisive moment, a term adopted as the title for his first major book. His work has influenced many photographers.Cartier-Bresson's first photojournalist photos to be published came in 1937 when he covered the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, for the French weekly Regards. He focused on the new monarch's adoring subjects lining the London streets, and took no pictures of the king. His photo credit read "Cartier", as he was hesitant to use his full family name. In photography, the smallest thing can be a great subject. The little human detail can become a leitmotiv.

Shutter Speed Photo Description

 This photo shows a decent example of "fast" shutter speed. This photographer must have had a slow shutter speed on his camera which didn't catch the exact frame of the cars moving. Not only does this photo portray shutter speed but it also shows examples of:
-View Point
-Rule of Thirds
& symmetry.

Shutter speed is a measure of how long your camera’s sensor is exposed to light. Most DSLRs use a mechanical shutter to control this. When you press the shutter release button or use the camera’s self-timer function, the blades that block the sensor open and close, letting light in.

ISO Research

Photography is all about controlling the amount of light hitting your film or sensor. You have 3 options to control this amount: 
- Aperture: controls the quantity of light entering the camera. It is counter-intuitive, but the smaller the number, the bigger the aperture (f/3.5 will allow more light than f/16, and so on) 
- The shutter speed controls for how long the light is hitting your film or sensor 
- and last, ISO witch is the sensibility of the film/sensor itself: In the same lighting conditions, aperture and shutter speed staying the same, a higher ISO will result in a brighter image than a smaller one. That's why, at night or in dark conditions photographer use high ISO to compensate the lack of light.
 The higher the number, the more sensitive it is. You can use faster shutter speeds and smaller apertures, photograph in lower light conditions. But there's a downside. 

The higher the ISO, the rougher the image will look. Digital cameras work best between ISO 100- 400, though some cameras seem to manage it better than others.

A device that controls the amount of light admitted through an opening. In photography and digital photography, aperture is the unit of measurement that defines the size of the opening in the lens that can be adjusted to control the amount of light reaching the film. Also known as "F-Stop."

For my background, I drew nothing much but a simple layout. Mostly in a grey color way. I'll add more objects later as I work. But the main theme is just a basic dark grey base.
There's not much difference between my drawing and the drawing on flash since it's only one color.

He was born in Fortín Sargento Cabral at the Esperanza Base near the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and weighed 7 lb 8 oz. His father, Captain Jorge Emilio Palma, was head of the Argentine army detachment at the base. While ten people have been born on Antarctica since, Palma's birthplace remains the most southerly.

Yakushima is one of the Ōsumi Islands belonging to Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. The island, has a population of 13,178. Access to the island is by hydrofoil ferry, slow car ferry, or by air to Yakushima Airport. Administratively, the whole island is the town of Yakushima. The town also serves neighbouring Kuchinoerabujima. The majority of the island is within the borders of the Kirishima-Yaku National Park.

In 1984, after winning a national title at the University of North Carolina and a Gold Medal at the Olympic games in Los Angeles, Michael Jordan was selected 3rd overall by the Chicago Bulls in the NBA Draft. That year Nike also signed Michael to a five-year endorsement contract worth a reported $2.5 million (plus royalties). In 1985, Nike gave Jordan and his signature line of sneakers and apparel a unique logo. Designer Peter Moore was given the task of coming up with the first Air Jordan shoe. The history and making of Texan Wire Wheels goes way back to 1984. Also known as, "swangas," to people who were originated in Texas. These rims were created by Cadillac with the help of Cragar Wire Wheels for the '83 and '84 Cadillac El Dorado. Today it has become a really popular settlement to our culture in Southern Texas.  Only 1000 pairs of these shoes were released.They came out in 2008, designed by Tony Taylor Jr. aka "Mr. Boober". Tony had Nephrotic Syndrome and had a kidney transplant at the age of 16.The shoes have palm trees and fade from black to blue, tony added that to the shoes because it signifies his triumph over his kidney disease.Tony him self is on the tongue holding a basketball and a quote underneath saying "I'm Fresh". When tony was in school everyone knew him as the fresh kid. He always wore the latest sneakers and top of the line clothing.The yellow and blue along with the number 15 are inspired by Tony's favorite basketball player Carmelo Anthony.Under the number 15 is the day he received his transplant.The shoes retailed at $125 and are now sold for $600.

The human brain works the same as a muscle does. When a person works out, they train their muscle to grow bigger, fitter, and stronger. So that their body's can adapt to being athletic and so on. Same as with the brain! When the brain senses success it sort of just moves on and forgets what happened. For example, you're in math class and today's the big test. You've studied for the exam and ace it! Good job. However, when the brain senses failure, it tends to correspond with that in a way that you'll most likely learn more off your mistakes and get a better grade the next time. The more you use your brain, the smarter you get just by training it.

This weekend was really cool. I finished sanding my car on the outside. Placed all plastic pieces from the inside back into its place since I painted my door jams. Now its ready to get sprayed. I'm excited! Swang, swang. Sunday I went hiking as a field trip with friends and teachers. I enjoyed experiencing the wonders of nature at Enchanted Falls in Fredricksburg, TX. This place is located about 2 hours from Austin. Since it was my first I didn't hesitate exploring other places my self. Sitting by the campfire, making smores, eating good food, and singing. Most of all I appreciate sharing many laughs and a good time with my classmates.

I came to school today and ran into a surprise. A good friend of mine came up to me as promised to heal my sprained fingers. I honestly thought she was joking until she did it. You see what had happened was that I caught a football wrong, jamming my fingers backwards. Which really hurt by the way. My friend felt bad so she decided to make it up to me by rubbing some Vicks vapor rub on my fingers and wrapped them up with venda. That was the coolest thing I've ever gotten from someone. Thanks.

I guess I can say that YouTube is one of my favorite websites. You can literally search anything and get instant results. I mostly spend my time watching DIY or life hack video because I find them really interesting. It's really helpful at times when you wish to do things to make life just a bit easier. Stuff like putting freezing soda on a ice cube set instead of water keeps your soda fresh is a really good idea. Anyways that's my free write for today.

This weekend was pretty cool. I got to spend time with friends and family. We enjoyed eating some good food at Pluckers on Saturday and BBQ at a car club members house yesterday for the Super Bowl. Wannabe comic book stars can slip into some Lycra for the Superhero Scramble, which takes place throughout the United States. Participants tackle 6.5-, 13- or 21-kilometer courses, which are filled with obstacles (slime, nets, water). Proceeds go to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation. Ive watched a video on how to make a mini metal foundry. I thought it was pretty interesting because you could do it yourself at home and make any type of aluminum object as you wish. I seen the guy make a sword out of aluminum in just 3 hours. Including him building the mini metal foundry. Great video. This morning is a bit tiring for me, since I haven't had any good sleep these past three days. This is due to having to deal with make-up homework and going to work. Not to mention that my allergies started kicking in on fifa status. Not a good feeling. But what helps is jamming out to my favorite music and being able to relax in my 6th period class. Which is one of my favorite classes. Although I have no medicine to take nor a tissue to wipe my nose with. I guess I can enjoy not seeing a worksheet for the next 30 minutes.

There are breeding eastern gray squirrels in Nova Scotia, but it is not known if this population was introduced or came from natural range expansion. It has also been introduced into Ireland, Britain, Italy, South Africa, and Australia. Eastern grey squirrels in Europe are a concern because they have displaced some of the native squirrels there.

Singer Chris Brown's concert was cut short when gunshots were fired in the middle of his performance, sending the crowd into panic. The 25-year-old was performing his song “Loyal” on stage at Fiesta Nightclub in San Jose, California Sunday when the incident happened leaving at least five people injured and rushed to hospital. Chris was not injured and was quickly rushed to safety by his entourage as chaos broke out on the dance floor. As a result, no suspects have been named. Police were questioning a number of people to investigate the motive behind the shootings.
